Artists & Projects

Underbelly Public Arts Lab and Festival features the cream of Sydney's emerging arts scene with scores of young, edgy, experimental and inspiring artists coming together to present the extravaganza which is Underbelly.

Artists must bring new projects to the lab and develop them over 10 days to be presented as performance, installation and work in progress at the festival finale. Each day the public is invited inside, to watch art unfold, as their projects come to life.

Projects include live music, video, sound, DJing, theatre, puppetry, dance, performance, visual art, photography and installations.

About the Artists
Boo Hiss is a cross-art form collective spawned from the ashes of a former larger arts collective; Bennu, who trained together as an ensemble for the last year and a half. Underbelly is the first project for this new Sydney collective. They are Sally Lewry (Performer), Mish Grigor (Performer), Lia Smith (Visual Artist) and Ryko Kalinko (Sound Artist)
Dara Gill and Georgie Meagher

PROJECT: ARTISTIC EXPERIMENTS IN SOCIAL NEUROSCIENCE

Performing experiments in subconscious perception with a particular focus on the relatively new field of Social Neuroscience. You might see, hear, feel or smell their work, but will you realise it? They want to pacify, direct, tempt, contain, observe and control you, but they don’t want you to know it.

About the Artists
Dara Gill and Georgie Meagher first met in a high school production of Les Misérables, Dara was Thénardier, and Georgie, Fantine. Since then, they have spent too much time together, moved away from musical theatre, started their own careers, and now collaborate (or argue) with one another as visual artists. Their practice is an in-depth process of (semi-obsessive) research and critical analysis of ideas they think are worth making art about.

ALPEN’S WORKING BEE

PROJECT: THE ONGOING MOMENT

The Ongoing Moment is a project by recording artist Alpen and designers Sopp Collective. An experiment in rapid, spontaneous, and collaborative production, it encompasses Alpen's Working Bee and Sopp Workshop: two processes which unfolded side-by-side during the first weekend of July 2008 at Sydney's Carriageworks artsprecinct.

As Alpen's assembled crew of nine musicians improvised and recorded over seven hours of music, Sopp's band of visual artists photographed, sculpted, sketched, sewed and schemed. For each piece, both artists and musicians took a shared keyword as a prompt, a point of departure. And - fittingly for a public arts lab! - the workshop and recording space was open for all to watch and listen.

The following day saw both Sopp and Alpen refining, finalising, and uploadingtheir creation. We hope you love it; we loved making it for you.

Recorded, mixed, edited, illustrated, sewn, photographed, built, designed, devised, mastered, compiled, uploaded and exhibited as part of Underbelly Public Arts Lab + Festival, in Bay 20 at Carriageworks on Saturday July 5 and Sunday July 6, 2008.

Credits:

Musicians: Andrew White, Danny Jumpertz, Caroline Jumpertz, Morgan McKellar,Marc Chomicki, Jon Tjhia, Greg Stone, Sus Harman, Brad Stafford
Audio mix by Danny Jumpertz with mastering by Greg Seiler
Designed by Sopp Collective
Released by Feral Media

Visual artists:

Sopp ( Katja Hartung, Nelson Alves, Thorsten Kulp)

We Buy Your Kids ( Sonney Day, Biddy Maroney)

Umeric ( Ashl Bolland)
Toby Jones
Julie De Paoli
Shane Rozario
Ben Barretto

DOWNLOAD ALBUM

http://workingbee.tumblr.com/

Tracklisting:::
1. PROJECT: REPOSITORY OF DISCARDED IDEAS

Providing a landing place for the discarded idea - a repository for the abandoned and a celebration of the unacknowledged. Prior to and during the Public Arts Lab these artists will be collecting people’s discarded ideas in text form. Then they will transform the written ideas via an installation so that each individual idea is given the solidity and mass which it was metaphorically denied via its abandonment. This project is a commentary on the artistic process itself - as ideas are formulated and discarded – a process of self-censorship repeated until an idea sticks. Often there is no great logic to this process – and the discarded ideas are either forgotten or lay dormant. Discarded ideas can be emailed to discarded.ideas@gmail.com
Anna, Lucy and Catherine are all final year students majoring in Sculpture, Performance and Installation at College of Fine Art, Paddington. This collaboration developed from ongoing dialogue formed during many hours spent together in the studio - and a shared love of cake.

Avionica is a massive collaboration between midi (electronic) musicians and visual artists (VJs) creating an immersive and interactive Audio Visual experience. Four AV teams will each compose a 20-25 minute set during the Underbelly Lab to perform live inside the geodesic Dome at the Festival.

About the Artists
Avionica is the brainchild of Adam Coom (Pixel Vision) and Barket Reszelski (Videokidz) with Dane Mumme (The Sculpter). While Adam and Bartek were running PlugnPlay, a series of VJ events, they met Dane who organised Midi in the City, an electronic music event. Interested in working together on a new format, AVionica was born and 2 huge collectives of artists come together!

Video : Adam Coom, Bartek Reszelski, Karolina Adamczyk, Nathan Garnett, Snezan Bajagic, Vladimir Jovicic, Harriet Birks
Baam

PROJECT: CUT/SLICE

The project Cut/ Slice (Handwork) explores the editing
process as an extension of the narrative in the writing phase of filmmaking. Each
artist's personal interpretation or 'physicalisation' of the screen editing phase of their film is exhibited as a work in
progress including storyboards, photographs and sculpture. These versions of the film are shown alongside the original
film and are projected/presented over the sculptures and the artists themselves. The re-hashing or mashing of the original film will explore how audiences interpret narrative and media works, and examine how filmic editing can influence mood, characterisation and understanding.

About the Artists
BAAM is a trio of artists hailing from
diverse media practices coming together to investigate and manipulate spaces of narrative film composition using a deconstructive and non- traditional approach. They are Annie Cohen,
Maisie Cohen and
Al Hamilton.

A theatre work in progress, the story of a group of orphans living in a
small south pacific island where everything unwanted washes up. When a
travelling showman brings an amazing flying machine to the town square,
the group of children retreat into their imaginations as they wonder
what must be possible beyond the decaying walls of their home. During
the Lab the ensemble will be developing characters and story lines
which look at what happens in the space between imagination and memory.

About the Artists
Bambina Borracha Productions was established by five young theatre
makers in Sydney committed to creating original work and providing
opportunities for emerging artists. Tim Spencer (Director), Bryony
Weiss (Producer), Blake Bowden, Steph Iredale, Faustina Delaney, Zoe
Norton Lodge, Julian Shaw (Actors), Roslyn Helper (Musician).

Biffo’s is a regular on the Sydney festival circuit including Cockatoo Island, The Great Escape and Peats Ridge. The team comes to Underbelly to develop and experiment with the logistics of its show and work on new ideas for performances. From sewing the tent to testing new ideas on audiences, Biffo’s plans to develop a number of new shows inside those peep holes!

About the Artists
Biffo's Blow Up Bonanza is an inflatable sideshow theatre. The Bonanza adopts the concept of the carnival sideshow, the intimate space of the peepshow and the dynamism of theatre in the round, to create a playful and interactive environment. The audience is separated from the performer by an impenetrable skin watching performances through the many portholes in the tent.
They are Marty Jay, Annabel Lines, Chas Glover, Celia Curtis and Ross Johnston

CuriousWorks

PROJECT: KINECT

CuriousWorks helps people in
under-resourced communities use new technologies to tell their own stories. As
part of its long term, grassroots program called ‘All Around You', the team has
recently completed the first of its ‘Kinect' Labs - building portable,
affordable, do-it-yourself technologies at Casula Powerhouse. CuriousWorks
plans to take these technologies to a series of workshops in NSW and remote Australia, helping kids tell their own stories in cheap and
sustainable ways and teaching them how to keep building and using these
technologies once the workshops are over.

Curiousworks brings a second
Kinect Lab to Underbelly - as well as building the technologies, the team will
be testing them, playing with them, handing them over to unsuspecting audiences
members in and around the CarriageWorks site. From projectors on tricycles to wearing straps that trigger sound or visuals on the basis of
your movement, watch this accessible and affordable technology in action as
Carriageworks becomes a creative playground for this project in progress.
